Preserve the identity, the culture from a people, through the times is hard
in social organizations. Even known like a strong man, the backwoodsman has
two obstacles in principle: first - the unfavourable region and weather and
second, the indifference, the disinterest or different interests from Federal
State and Municipal government for those citizens. Despite of being deprived
the backwoodsman uses old technique and knows like no one , how to organize
or redirect action to the hardest moments.
Go Away Severinos project tells us a trajectory of Landless Movements (MST). Using parts from the poem Morte e Vida Severina written by João Cabral de Melo Neto giving support to the third part of "Os Sertões", where the fight for survival shows the social and political actions.
O Berro - an experimental newspaper from Journalism course had a special edition named: Unicap celebrates "Os Sertões" centenary. This newspaper talks about Euclides da Cunha classics and the influence that this book have on high schools; Cinema, social and religious problems analysis; the fascination in writers and researches caused by the book; the project "Olhares…", apart from the celebration of the 90th anniversary of Luiz Gonzaga. Religious Backwoods has many pictures about religiosity, buildings and centenary practices.
The academic thoughts was practice in "Debating The Backwoods" by scientific and thematic researchers, were presented by articles: the first one, As Visagens do Imperador da Pedra do Reino sobre "Os Sertões", shows the equal things between characters in books written by Ariano Suassuna and Euclides da Cunha's classic, through the real and fictions facts; the second one, Cantadores Encantadores, is a study about three Northeast poets: João Cabral de Melo Neto, Luiz Gonzaga and Patativa do Assaré; the third one, A seca através do fotojornalismo, makes an analysis through pictures published by Jornal do Commercio in 1998, between April and May, one of the worst periods in the twentieth century to the backwoodsman, because it doesn't rain. The study Impressões de Uma Terra Chamada Sertão is based on the first part of "Os Sertões" - The Land. To compose this scenery, passages from the romance O Quinze and Vidas Secas, about the land were used.
